The water/mixture is called mud, but its not really mud. It looks muddy but its a mixture of several things and its used to lubricate the hole, pipe, and cutting attachment.

These are 3 1000HP electric motors which turn the pipe. The pipe turns at 10rps which spins a hydraulic motor at the end of the pipe that turns the cutting head at 200rps
